Lipoedema

Lipoedema may be found in women of all shapes and sizes, it is underdiagnosed & often misdiagnosed as obesity, however, advances in medical research are improving our understanding of this condition. It is not known what causes lipoedema. It is thought that around 60% of people with lipoedema have a family member who also has the disease, so there may be a genetic link.

The main symptom of lipoedema is a buildup of adipose tissue (fat) in the arms and legs. This can be accompanied by other symptoms including pain, swelling, loose skin, and bruising easily. The texture of fat beneath the skin can feel different from other parts of your body. Symptoms often begin at times of hormonal change, such as pubertypregnancy, and menopause.

As the condition worsens, fat deposits can grow bigger, and over time, these fat cells can block vessels in the lymphatic system. This can prevent the lymphatic system from draining lymph fluid, which can cause a buildup of fluid and result in lymphoedema.

At Flourish Therapy Adelaide we understand that this is not a condition of overeating or lack of activity. Management of lipoedema can include manual lymphatic drainage and compression, including short-term bandaging and longer-term compression garments to help with mobility and pain. Additionally, we can advise on the best activity & exercise to maximise your function.
